Although new to politics, Matt’s thirty-two year career has prepared him to represent Eastern Connecticut in the U.S. Congress. As the son of a career submarine officer and a submarine officer himself who served twenty-eight years on both active duty and reserve status, he has lived in a myriad of places but has lived in Eastern Connecticut for more than half his life and has always called Connecticut home.
Matt graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1988 with a degree in Systems Engineering. He has also earned a Masters in Business Administration from Santa Clara University in 1998 and a Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Connecticut in 2003. His active Navy service included a tour on USS Providence (SSN-719), and on the staffs of Commander, Destroyer Squadron TWENTY-ONE (CDS-21) embarked on USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), Commander Submarine Group Seven (CSG-7) in Yokosuka, Japan, and the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV) Director, Assessments Division (N81) at the Pentagon. His Naval Reserve service included various units including Command of Submarine Support Facility Detachment 201.
Matt’s previous civilian career includes positions at Applied Materials in Santa Clara, CA as a product manager for semiconductor wafer handling equipment; Commissioning Agents as project manager for computer validation of biotechnology/pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities; and Schneider Electric as a systems engineer. Currently he works at Sonalysts in Waterford supporting submarine combat systems development. He has also ventured into the entrepreneurial realm with stints as a web site developer and part-time wine bar owner.
Matt lives in Mystic with his wife Heidi and their two children, Nate and Daniel. In his spare time, he is the Cub Master for Cub Scout Pack 37, supports annual fundraising efforts for children’s cancer research for St. Baldrick’s, is a member of the Mystic Flag Committee.
